The Federal Authorities has introduced plans to start the decarbonization of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Worldwide Airport in Abuja.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Improvement, Festus Keyamo, acknowledged that the challenges posed by local weather change necessitate decisive and concerted motion by stakeholders to undertake decarbonization.

He prompt exploring group electrification of aprons and terminals, sustainable aviation gasoline (SAF) corridors, and waste-to-energy tasks to cut back emissions in airport operations.

The Minister, represented by the Everlasting Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Improvement, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ engagement on carbon emissions administration on the Nnamdi Azikiwe Worldwide Airport (NAIA) in Abuja, organised by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

He mentioned: “The worldwide aviation group stands at a crossroads. On one hand, we’re drivers of financial progress, connectivity, and nationwide improvement. On the opposite, we’re duty-bound to handle our environmental impression with utmost seriousness.

“The problem of local weather change isn’t a distant theoretical concern; it’s a current and urgent actuality that calls for decisive, concerted motion. For Nigeria, a nation poised for exponential progress in air journey and commerce, embedding sustainability into the very core of our aviation infrastructure isn’t an choice, it’s an crucial for long run, resilient prosperity”.

Additionally talking, the Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, acknowledged that local weather change poses a risk to the worldwide aviation trade, with potential detrimental ripple results on companies and livelihoods if not correctly managed.

Mrs. Kuku, who was represented by the Director of Human Sources and Administration, Dr. Luqman Eniola, mentioned FAAN is dedicated to decarbonizing its operations by way of the implementation of strategic measures.

On the essence of stakeholder engagement, she mentioned: “This discussion board is predicted to assist FAAN to know emission administration measures in order that we will combine them into our carbon administration plan for the airport, the place it’s obligatory.”

She hinted that the FAAN ACA Crew and the Carbon Emission Discount Committee (CERC) carried out mapping in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Enugu, and Port Harcourt, noting that electrical energy consumption accounted for about 90 % of the full emissions at Lagos airport from 2017 to 2023.

Kuku mentioned the implementation of emission discount measures for the Lagos airport has commenced, including that additional actions can be thought-about throughout the reconstruction and enlargement of the airport’s terminal buildings.
