Left-wing impartial Catherine Connolly was on Saturday declared the winner of Eire’s presidential election, beating her centrist opponent by an enormous margin in a contest marred by spoilt ballots.
Connolly, 68, a lawyer, lawmaker and outspoken critic of each the USA and European Union, gained over 63 % of the ballots, nicely forward of centrist candidate Heather Humphreys, on 29.5 %.
