Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the Nationwide Meeting is not going to permit any of its members to carry the legislature “hostage”, insisting that self-discipline and respect for institutional guidelines stay important for the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.

Akpabio said this in a press release by his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, on Saturday, titled “The Trials and Triumphs of a Resilient Nigeria’s tenth Senate.”

He maintained that the Senate’s dedication to imposing its standing orders was not an try and silence dissenting voices however a needed act to safeguard order and the sanctity of democratic establishments.

“Unquestionably, Nigeria’s Senate belongs in that international fellowship of parliaments that recognise chaos as the center of anarchy and order because the soul of democracy.

“Its insistence on upholding inside self-discipline and defending the authority of its management is, due to this fact, neither private nor punitive. It’s institutional self-preservation.”

He added that the Senate’s refusal to be held hostage by any member was a reaffirmation of collective accountability over “particular person grandstanding.”

“When the chamber asserts that it’s going to not be held hostage by the disruptive instincts of any single member, it’s affirming the primacy of collective accountability over particular person grandstanding. That is how robust legislatures endure: not by silencing dissent, however by making certain that dissent respects the bounds of process.”

Akpabio additionally underscored the significance of parliamentary self-discipline as a common normal for democratic governance, citing examples from different democracies.

“The self-discipline of parliamentary conduct is a common marker of political civilisation. In the UK’s Home of Commons, the authority of the Speaker is absolute and unchallenged, making certain that debates proceed with respect and precision. No member, no matter get together or reputation, could brazenly defy the Speaker’s ruling with out penalties. In Canada’s Parliament, even the fiercest partisans perceive that process is sacred. Heated disagreements are channelled by means of decorum, not chaos. Equally, in Australia, the Senate’s potential to carry the manager accountable relies upon not on the whims of politics however on the meticulous enforcement of guidelines that hold legislative integrity intact.”

He added that robust democracies endure not by avoiding dissent however by dealing with it throughout the boundaries of process and respect for institutional order.

“In any democracy, the query is rarely whether or not there will probably be dissent. As a substitute, it’s at all times about how will probably be dealt with. The actual measure of a democratic establishment is the way it handles inside turbulence. The Tenth Senate has confronted its fair proportion of provocations and character clashes, but it has constantly chosen the trail of precept over populism. When it insists that guidelines should be adopted and that management should be revered, it isn’t performing out of satisfaction however out of obligation. Each time the Senate enforces its Standing Orders, it sends a message that Nigeria’s democracy is powerful sufficient to self-discipline itself,” the assertion added.
