The Socio-Financial Rights and Accountability Mission (SERAP) has requested President Bola Tinubu to make public the small print of the method for appointing the following chairman of the Impartial Nationwide Electoral Fee (INEC).
In a letter dated September 27 and signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP mentioned Nigerians should know the quantity and names of candidates for INEC chairman and whether or not the Council of State has been consulted, as constitutionally required.
“The choice and appointment course of for Mr Yakubu’s alternative can not and shouldn’t be a closed store,” SERAP acknowledged.
“Openness and transparency within the course of would enhance public belief within the fee’s independence and impartiality.”
The group harassed that secrecy within the appointment would undermine INEC’s credibility.
“Anybody to be appointed as INEC chairman should clearly be non-partisan, impartial, neutral and impartial,” it added.
Having spent 10 years as INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure will come to an finish in November.
