Police in Rivers State have arrested former Tremendous Eagles ahead, Victor Ezeji, over allegations of fraud involving dud cheques value almost N40m.
In accordance with The Guardian, Ezeji was picked up by officers of the Rivers State Legal Investigation Division on Monday, after weeks of surveillance.
It’s understood that the 44-year-old and his spouse, Celestina, bought 60,000 litres of diesel from a businessman, Dagogo Emmanuel, in July.
They allegedly issued cheques totalling N39.8m, which later bounced.
The couple reportedly went into hiding earlier than Ezeji was tracked down this week.
The previous Enyimba striker admitted signing the cheques however denied direct involvement within the deal, insisting his spouse dealt with the transaction. Celestina stays on the run.
Ezeji’s profession spanned nearly 20 years, throughout which he performed for Sharks, Dolphins, Sunshine Stars, Heartland, and Enyimba, the place he lifted the CAF Champions League twice.
