Former Senate President and the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the primary opposition Peoples Democratic Celebration, PDP, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has mentioned that the defection of PDP Governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, had confirmed his earlier warning that the APC had an agenda of pushing Nigeria right into a one-party state.

Wabara, who was reacting to the most recent defection of Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State and the rumoured deliberate defection of his Bayelsa State counterpart, Douye Diri, to the APC, accused the nationwide ruling occasion of orchestrating the gale of defection that had hit varied opposition events.

Reiterating his earlier warning that “one-party state is a prelude to autocracy and retrogression,” the previous Senate President accused the APC of stifling democracy in Nigeria.

He regretted that the Nigerian democracy, which had thrived beneath the PDP, “is being strangulated” beneath the watch of the ruling APC.

Wabara mentioned that defections weren’t as a result of “the APC is a greater platform however as a result of it has ambushed democracy”.

“I noticed this coming. I raised the alarm, however was ignored. This isn’t the democracy that we jealously nurtured and guarded. This can be a corrupted model of democracy.

“The ruling APC believes in intimidation of the opposition into submission. No democracy has ever survived with out the opposition. APC is killing Nigeria’s democracy by muzzling the opposition.

“APC’s refusal to hold out electoral reforms that might assure free and credible polls is what’s making a number of the opposition members to defect. That is extra of coerced defection,” he mentioned.

The previous Senate President mentioned the ruling occasion had not demonstrated any capability to navigate Nigeria out of the woods.

“Nigerians know very properly that there’s nothing engaging within the APC. It was by no means ready for governance and that’s the reason it has continued to oversee the erosion of our democratic values.

“Since grabbing energy in 2015, the APC has superintended over Nigeria’s retrogression. The nation is now on the reverse gear. Poverty and financial hardship will stand out as APC’s biggest legacies for Nigeria,” Wabara mentioned.

The previous Senate President argued that the PDP Governors defecting to the APC had all carried out higher than their APC counterparts, however had been solely leaving the PDP primarily to safeguard their political future.

He, nonetheless, declared that their departure wouldn’t result in the collapse of the PDP however allow the previous ruling occasion to reposition itself forward of 2027.

Senator Wabara mentioned that though a number of the Governors and few outstanding members of the occasion had left the occasion, the plenty are nonetheless with the PDP.

“That few people determined to go away doesn’t in any means counsel that the plenty have left us . PDP remains to be very fashionable amongst Nigerian plenty as a result of they know the way the PDP incubated and preserved our democracy.

“Nigerians can take this to the financial institution; PDP is not going to die. We’ve come a good distance, and we’ll surmount the present storm,” mentioned Wabara.

He urged PDP members, particularly these from the South East, to stay steadfast of their help for the occasion, expressing confidence that brighter future awaits the occasion in 2027.

Senator Wabara informed the ruling APC to not have a good time but, predicting that the ruling occasion is headed for implosion.

“In 2027, impoverished and struggling Nigerians, not Governors, will determine the destiny of the APC,” Wabara declared.
