Public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu has criticised the conduct of the weekend elections in Anambra State, saying the incidents of vote-buying present the depth of poverty and ignorance in Nigeria.

In a put up shared on X on Sunday, Shehu lamented that some voters had been allegedly influenced with simply N500 and snacks like Gala throughout the polls.

“When Gala, junk snacks, and N500 are sufficient to sway votes, because it occurred over the weekend in Anambra State, then overlook democracy in Nigeria and consign it to the dustbin the place it actually belongs,” he wrote.

He mentioned the event mirrored the nation’s worsening financial hardship.

He famous that starvation and deprivation have pushed many voters to commerce their votes for meals and small money.

“That 139 million Nigerians are by excessive starvation, hunger, and penury has been confirmed by the downtrodden voters in Anambra. It additionally applies to all areas with various levels. Disgrace of a nation,” Shehu added.

The put up was accompanied by a video exhibiting folks distributing snacks and cash to voters, largely girls.
