The Nigeria Police Power has intercepted over 100 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly generally known as petrol, in separate anti-smuggling operations aimed toward curbing cross-border financial crimes.
Power Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a press release on Saturday, noting that the arrests and seizures had been carried out by operatives of the Border Patrol Unit throughout routine stop-and-search operations.
In keeping with him, one suspect, recognized as Yasir Adamu, was arrested alongside the Illela–Sokoto Freeway whereas transporting 80 jerrycans of petrol allegedly meant for smuggling into the Niger Republic.
“After preliminary investigation, it was found that the suspect was making an attempt to smuggle the petroleum product throughout the border into the Niger Republic,” Hundeyin said.
In a separate operation in Katsina State, police operatives intercepted one other consignment comprising 35 jerrycans of petrol, every containing 25 litres, deserted by suspected smugglers who fled upon sighting the patrol staff.
Hundeyin mentioned efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, including that the most recent interceptions replicate the Power’s renewed dedication to strengthening border safety and dismantling unlawful gas provide networks.
The Inspector-Normal of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, recommended the operatives for his or her vigilance and professionalism, assuring that the Power would intensify operations in opposition to all types of financial sabotage.
